Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pyrochroit.

Etymology: < German Pyrochroit (L. J. Igelström 1864, in Ann. der Physik u. Chemie 122 182) < pyro- pyro- comb. form + ancient Greek χροιά colour ( < the base of ancient Greek χρώς colour ( < the same base as χρῶμα colour: see chrome n.) + -ιά , suffix forming concrete nouns) + German -it -ite suffix¹, so called because it becomes coloured when heated. Compare earlier dichroite n., phoenicochroite n., etc.

Mineralogy.

A manganese-containing mineral which occurs in hydrothermal vein deposits, often as pale greenish or bluish crystals in foliated masses which darken on exposure.Pyrochroite is manganese( ii) hydroxide, Mn(OH)₂; the manganese analogue of brucite. Crystal system: trigonal.
