Etymology: < French raccourci shortened (1611 in Cotgrave in heraldic use, with reference to a cross), use as adjective of past participle of raccourcir to shorten (13th cent. in Old French) < re- re- prefix + accourcir to shorten (1162), variant (with different stem) of acorcier to shorten (second half of the 12th cent.; earlier in sense ‘to become short’ (1119 in Anglo-Norman)), either < a- ( < classical Latin ad- ad- prefix) + corcier to shorten (although this is first attested later: c1280 as courchier ; < an unattested post-classical Latin *curtiare < classical Latin curtus curt adj.¹), or perhaps < an unattested similarly formed post-classical Latin *adcurtiare.
