Origin: Formed within English, by blending. Etymons: quercine adj., citron n.
Etymology: Blend of quercine adj. and citron n.The dye was developed by E. Bancroft (compare quot. 1785 at sense 1).
1. The inner bark of the American black oak, Quercus velutina, used as a source of the yellow dye quercitrin and in tanning (more fully quercitron bark). Also: a preparation of this used in dyeing (cf. quercitrin n.).
