Etymology: < post-classical Latin mediatrix (early 5th cent.), feminine form corresponding to classical Latin mediātor mediator n.: see -trix suffix. Compare earlier mediatrice n. N.E.D. gives the pronunciation of the Latinate plural form mediatrices as (mīdiĕtrəi·sīz) /miːdɪəˈtraɪsiːz/.
A female mediator.Often applied to the Virgin Mary, believed in many Christian denominations (esp. the Roman Catholic Church) to intercede with God on behalf of humankind.
