Etymology: < post-classical Latin querci-, combining form of classical Latin quercus oak (see quercine adj.) + tannic adj., after French quercitannique (1841 or earlier), apparently originally translating German Eichengerbsäure (1841 or earlier), apparently itself translating Swedish eke-garvsyra (Berzelius 1836, in Årsberättelser om Vetenskapernas Framsteg, afgifne af Kongl. Vetenskaps-Academiens Embetsmän 196).
