Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pyrallolit.

Etymology: < German Pyrallolit (N. G. von Nordenskiöld 1821, in Jrnl. f. Chemie u. Physik 31 395) < pyro- pyro- comb. form + ancient Greek ἄλλος other, different (see allo- comb. form; so called because the substance changes colour when heated) + German -lit -lite comb. form¹.

Mineralogy. Now rare.

A magnesium silicate of variable composition, typically of a whitish or green colour, now usually identified as a form of talc.

1866–8 H. Watts Dict. Chem. IV. 753 Pyrallolite, name of a series of decomposition-products of augite and occasionally of hornblende, consisting mainly of magnesian hydrosilicates. They blacken when heated, then burn white if in contact with the air.

1889 Amer. Naturalist 23 528 Masses of pyrallolite and erythrite and needles of byssolite in calcite, all from the shafts of a magnetic mine at French Creek, Pa.

1911 Encycl. Brit. XXVI. 369/2 The term pyrallolite was given by Nils G. Niordenskiöld to a mineral from Finland, which appears to be talc pseudomorphous after pyroxene.
