Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: tantalum n., alloy n.
Etymology: < tan- (in tantalum n.) + -oy (in alloy n.), with reference to the fact that a tantalum alloy was used in electrolytic rectifiers manufactured by the Tulsemere Manufacturing Company (compare quot. 1928 at main sense).
A proprietary name for electrical apparatus concerned with sound reproduction and amplification. Subsequently used generally, esp. to denote a form of public address system.
