Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin quadrant- , quadrāns , sesquicentennial n.
Etymology: Irregularly < qua- (in classical Latin quadrant-, quadrāns quarter: see quadrant n.1) + -squicentennial (in sesquicentennial n., sesquicentennial adj.), the intended sense being ‘a centennial plus a quarter’ (compare quot. 1962 at sense A.; the coinage is frequently attributed to Frank Hatten, a resident of Delavan).
