Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prinus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prinus holm oak, ilex (Vulgate) < ancient Greek πρῖνος , of unknown origin. Compare Middle French prine holm oak (1350), and perhaps also Middle French prin (1517 in uncertain sense, perhaps ‘pine’; perhaps due to confusion with pin pine n.2).
Obsolete. rare.
More fully prine tree. The holm oak, Quercus ilex.
