单词 prinkum-prankum
释义

prinkum-prankumn.

Brit. /ˌprɪŋkəmˈpraŋkəm/, U.S. /ˌprɪŋkəmˈpræŋkəm/
Forms: 1500s–1700s princum-prancum, 1500s–1700s 1900s– prinkum-prankum, 1600s prinkum-prank'um, 1600s princum and prancum.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: prancome n., prank n.2; prank v.1; prank v.4
Etymology: Origin uncertain. It is possible that the three senses may show three different words of independent origin, but the formal identity points at least to some association between them, and the independent development of such an unusual form in three distinct words seems unlikely. In sense 1 apparently either a reduplication (with vowel variation) of prancome n. (although the sense of that word, and hence the semantic connection, is unclear), or a reduplication (with vowel variation and apparently arbitrary extension) of prank n.2 In sense 2 perhaps a reduplication (with vowel variation and apparently arbitrary extension) of prank v.1; compare later prink v.3 In sense 3 perhaps a reduplication (with vowel variation and apparently arbitrary extension) of prank v.4 (compare the Germanic parallels cited at that entry, as well as apparently similarly formed early modern Dutch pronckeprincken (1564 in an isolated attestation in uncertain sense, perhaps ‘to show off’)). Compare also earlier prink v.2, and slightly later princum n. Perhaps compare later crinkum-crankum n.
