Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: pumpkin n., -ification suffix.
Etymology: < pumpkin n. + -ification suffix, after Hellenistic Greek ἀποκολοκύντωσις transformation into a pumpkin ( < ancient Greek ἀπο- apo- prefix + κολοκύνθη pumpkin, of uncertain origin + -ωσις -osis suffix, after Hellenistic Greek ἀποθέωσις apotheosis n.), the title of a travesty (ascribed to Seneca) of the apotheosis of the Roman emperor Claudius Caesar.
Transformation into a pumpkin; used esp. with reference to the elevation to divine status of the Roman emperor Claudius (see quot. 1856). Hence allusively: extravagant or absurdly uncritical glorification; an instance of this.
