Etymology: < post-classical Latin pulveratrix (1555 or earlier: see note) < classical Latin pulverāre pulver v. + -trīx -trix suffix (the feminine form is used after avis (feminine) bird), after ancient Greek κονιστικοί , plural ( Aristotle Historia animalium 633a29, 30, 633b1; < κόνις dust (see conite n.) + ιστικός -istic suffix). Compare later Pulveratores n.The following quot. paraphrases a passage in P. Belon Histoire de la nature des oyseaux (1555) 230 which contains the post-classical Latin word:1957 Systematic Zool. 6 132/1 Because they don't wallow in dust..[but] cleanse their feathers with water; they have been named Lotrices in contrast to the terrestrial birds which are called Pulveratrices. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pɒlvĕrēi·triks) /pʌlvəˈreɪtrɪks/.

A bird which maintains its feathers by driving dust into the plumage and shaking it out.

1770 G. White Let. 8 Oct. in Nat. Hist. Selborne (1789) 133 Ray remarks that birds of the gallinæ order, as cocks and hens, partridges, and pheasants, &c. are pulveratrices, such as dust themselves... Common house-sparrows are great pulveratrices, being frequently seen grovelling and wallowing in dusty roads.
1793 J. Leslie tr. Comte de Buffon Nat. Hist. Birds II. 222 The ancients called these birds Pulveratrices [L. pulveratrices], which roll in the dust to rid themselves of the insects that torment them.
