Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Paranthropus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Paranthropus (R. Broom: see quot 19381) < para- para- prefix1 + -anthropus (see Pithecanthropus n.).
Physical Anthropology.
A fossil hominid of the genus Paranthropus, known from remains found in southern Africa and sometimes assigned to Australopithecus; (also) the genus itself.
