† puchersomeadj.Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, -some suffix1. Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin + -some suffix1.It has been suggested that the first element of the word shows puck n.1, but if so the form seems difficult to account for. Alternatively, it might show poker n.3 or one of the Germanic words cited at that entry, although all of these appear to be first attested later; the same is true of pother n. In spite of an apparent semantic parallel between the word and sinful in the variant reading in the Göttingen manuscript, it seems phonologically unlikely that the first element is Anglo-Norman peccheor , peccheur , pecchur , etc., Middle French pecheur sinner (10th cent. in Old French; French pécheur ; < post-classical Latin peccator (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin peccāt- , past participial stem of peccāre to sin (see peccant adj. and n.) + -or -or suffix (compare -ātor -ator suffix); > Middle English pecchour (c1450 in an isolated attestation)). Obsolete. rare. a1400 (a1325) (Vesp.) 2182 (MED) Iapheth had suns seuen, Aparti puchersum [a1400 Gött. sinful] to neuen, Gomer, madan, iena, magog, Tubal, tiras, and mosog.
