Etymology: < hen n.¹ + bit n.², after Middle Dutch hoenderbeet (1554 in Dodoens). Compare Middle Low German hennebit chickweed, German Hühnerbiss (1544 in Dodoens as †Hunerbisz ) and also post-classical Latin morsus gallinae (see margeline n.), all apparently reflecting the fact that some of these plants were commonly eaten by chickens (compare with similar motivation chickweed n., chickenweed n.: see note at sense 1).
