Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin protypum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin protypum, false reading (e.g. in 16th-cent. editions of Pliny) for classical Latin prostypum (plural prostypa ) design executed in low relief < Hellenistic Greek πρόστυπος executed in low relief (also πρόστυποι , use as noun of masculine plural, denoting cherubim) < πρός to, towards (see prosody n.) + τύπος type n. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (prǫ·tipǫn) /ˈprɒtɪpɒn/.
Architecture. Obsolete.
A sculpture, moulding, etc., in bas-relief.
