Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prōtrītus.
Etymology: < classical Latin prōtrītus trite, vulgar (2nd cent. a.d.), use as adjective of past participle of prōterere to tread underfoot, to blunt by over-use, make trite < prō- pro- prefix1 + terere to rub (see trite adj.).
Obsolete.
Of words, an opinion, etc.: familiar, well-worn; trite, hackneyed.
