Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: go v., around adv., merry-go-around n., go-round n.
Etymology: < go v. + around adv., in sense 1 perhaps as shortening of merry-go-around n., in senses 2 and 4 probably as alteration of go-round n. Compare earlier to go around at go v. Phrasal verbs 1. With sense 3 compare earlier runaround n. 4.
Chiefly colloquial (originally U.S.).
1. = merry-go-round n. 1a; (occasionally more generally) any mechanical device which rotates or has a circular motion. Obsolete.
