Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative of the bird's alarm call, with remodelling after the imperative of to go away at go v. Phrasal verbs 1. Compare Afrikaans kwêvoël (late 19th cent. or earlier; < a first element of imitative origin + voël bird: see fowl n.) and also Setswana mokoe ( < mo-, singular class prefix + a stem of imitative origin).
In full go-away bird. Any of three African turacos of the genus Corythaixoides, which have distinctive loud alarm calls; esp. the all-grey C. concolor of southern Africa (also called grey loerie).
