Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + copulation n.
1. Zoology. An action or process resembling, imitating, or performing the function of copulation; esp. a process in which male gametes are passed between individuals in close contact but not by direct transfer from male to female sexual organs.

1914 W. E. Kellicott Textbk. Gen. Embryol. iii. 105 First, among many of the Crustacea, Annulata, Gasteropods, Cephalopods, and Amphibia, there is a process of pseudo-copulation or amplexus, where..the sperm are received by the female in or near the reproductive cavities or openings.

2. Biology. An action or process by which a male bee or wasp attempts to copulate with certain orchid flowers that mimic the scent and often the appearance of the female insect, resulting (when repeated in successive flowers) in pollination of the plant.
