单词 gaby
释义

gabyn.

Brit. /ˈɡeɪbi/, U.S. /ˈɡeɪbi/
Forms: 1700s– gabey, 1700s– gaby; English regional 1700s– gawby, 1800s gaayby (Berkshire), 1800s gauby, 1800s gauvey (Yorkshire), 1800s gobby (Cheshire), 1800s–1900s gorby; also Scottish (southern) 1800s– gaibie; also Irish English 2000s– gaaby; also Welsh English (Pembrokeshire) 1900s gooby; also Manx English 1800s gawbie.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown.Perhaps < an unattested noun < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic gapi rash, reckless person, Danish (regional) gabe fool; representing a derivative noun < the early Scandinavian cognate of Old Icelandic gapa gape v.) + -y suffix6; or perhaps < gawp v. (compare also later gawp n.) + -y suffix6 (compare English regional (northern) gawpy , Scots gaupie , gawpie (noun) fool, simpleton (19th cent.)). However, both of the etymologies pose formal difficulties, especially in explaining the medial -b- and the (presumed) early use of -y suffix6 with a common noun. Compare Scots (chiefly Shetland and Orkney) gappy , gaipy (noun) fool, (adjective) rash, foolish (early 20th cent.), probably < the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic gapi (see above). Compare also Old Icelandic gapsmaðr fool ( < gap gap n.1).
