Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin protimesis; Greek προτίμησις.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin protimesis preference (1603 in a British source) or its etymon ancient Greek προτίμησις preference < προτιμᾶν to honour before or above ( < προ- pro- prefix2 + τιμᾶν to honour < τιμή honour: see timocracy n.) + -σις -sis suffix.
Obsolete. rare.
The valuing of one thing above another; preference.
