Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prosector.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prosector dissector, anatomist (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin prōsect- , past participial stem of prōsecāre to cut off, amputate ( < prō- pro- prefix1 + secāre to cut: see secant adj.) + -or -or suffix. Compare French prosecteur (1796).
A person who dissects cadavers, esp. in preparation for anatomical teaching; an assistant to an anatomist, pathologist, or zoologist who is responsible for performing dissections. Cf. demonstrator n. 3a.
