Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French profilographe.

Etymology: < French profilographe (1880 or earlier) < profil (see profile n.) + -o- -o- connective + -graphe -graph comb. form.In early use the word refers to a device invented and patented by J. A. A. Dumoulin, and exhibited at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855. However, there is no evidence for his calling the device by this name in this period; the French and British patents (French Patent 15,468, by Dumoulin of Paris, dated 1853; British Patent No. 1464 of 1853) both refer to the device simply as an instrument for measuring and tracing outlines without giving a specific name to it. See further La Nature (1880) II. 31.

Originally: an instrument which automatically records the contour line of the ground over which it travels; (later also) = profilometer n. 2.
