pronotaryn.

Forms: 1500s– pronotary, 1600s pronotory, 1700s pronothary.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin pronotarius chief clerk of a court (late 15th cent. in an Italian source; also pronotarius apostolicus member of the college of notaries of the Curia of the Roman Catholic Church (1513 in a French source)), perhaps an alteration (with prefix substitution: see pro- prefix1) of protonotarius prothonotary n. Compare Spanish †pronotario (13th cent.; rare). Compare earlier prenotary n. (which is apparently not recorded denoting a papal official).
