Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin fungīnus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin fungīnus of the nature of a mushroom, fungaceous ( < fungus fungus n. + -īnus -ine suffix1) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1898) gives the pronunciation as (fɒ·ndʒinəs) /ˈfʌndʒɪnəs/.
Obsolete.
Of or relating to a fungus (= fungal adj.); resembling a fungus in shape or texture (= fungoid adj.).
