Etymology: < classical Latin prōclāmātor person who cries out or proclaims (in an isolated attestation in Cicero, though the reading has been disputed; subsequently in post-classical Latin: a636 in Isidore) < prōclāmāt- , past participial stem of prōclāmāre proclaim v. + -or -or suffix. Compare French proclamateur (1541 in Middle French; rare). Compare earlier proclaimer n.
A person who proclaims or makes a public announcement; spec. an officer of the Court of Common Pleas.
