Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French accoler.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French acoler, acoller, Middle French accoler to throw the arms round the neck of, to embrace (11th cent. in Old French) < a a- prefix5 + col neck (see col n.1). Compare Italian accollare (1535), and also post-classical Latin accollare to decorate (14th cent. in a Polish source).
Obsolete.
transitive. To throw the arms round the neck of; to embrace, clasp, hug. Also intransitive.
