Etymology: < French Galibi (noun) a member of the Galibi people (1664 or earlier), (adjective) of or relating to these people and their language (1734 or earlier) < Carib Galibi (1664 in a French source, or earlier) < the Proto-Cariban base with the sense ‘man, human being, indigenous person’ which (by a different route) was borrowed into Spanish as caribe Carib n. Compare Carib n. and discussion at that entry.
