Etymology: < scripture n. + -ist suffix. Compare earlier scripturer n., Scripturian n.In the specific use with reference to a member of a Jewish sect (see sense 1) after post-biblical Hebrew qērā'īm, plural noun (see Karaite n.).
1. A person who believes that scripture is the sole authority for faith and religious practice, or advocates a strict adherence to the literal interpretation of scripture; cf. scripturalist n. 1, scripturism n. 2. Sometimes: spec. a member of a Jewish sect recognizing only the Hebrew scriptures (and not the Talmud) as religious authority; a Karaite.
