Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Prosobranche.
Etymology: < French Prosobranche (as plural, Prosobranches , H. Milne-Edwards 1848, in Ann. des sci. naturelles: zool. 9 109) < ancient Greek πρόσω forwards ( < προ- pro- prefix1 + a suffix forming adverbs indicating direction) + βράγχια gills (see branchiae n.); compare -branch comb. form. Compare scientific Latin Prosobranchia , subclass name (1866 or earlier) and Prosobranchiata (see prosobranchiate adj.). With use as adjective compare earlier prosobranchiate adj.

A. n.
A gastropod mollusc of the large subclass Prosobranchia, which comprises forms having the mantle cavity and gills, etc., anterior to the heart, and includes limpets, abalones, conches, and many terrestrial and aquatic snails. Cf. opisthobranch n., pulmonate n.The subclass Prosobranchia comprises the archaeogastropods, mesogastropods, and neogastropods; it has recently been replaced by a number of different subclasses (see quot. 2000).
