Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese Rinzai.
Etymology: < Japanese Rinzai (late 12th cent.; more fully Rinzai-shū Rinzai sect) < Middle Chinese (compare Chinese Línjì zōng, the name of the Chinese school of Buddhism upon which Rinzai is based < the name of Linji Yixuan (Chinese Línjì Yìxuán; Japanese Rinzai Gigen; d. 867), the founder of the school + zōng religion, sect).
One of the three principal branches of Zen Buddhism, characterized by the active pursuit of enlightenment, esp. through the extensive use of koans. Frequently attributive. Cf. Soto n., Obaku n.The teachings of Linji Yixuan reached Japan in the 12th cent.
