Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French printanier.
Etymology: < French printanier (adjective) (1767 in culinary use in potage printanier (compare quot. 1861)), specific sense of printanier of or belonging to springtime (1553 in Middle French; < Old French prins tans springtime (see prime temps n.) + -ier : see -ier suffix). The use as noun is apparently not paralleled in French. In β forms after French printanière, feminine of printanier (apparently in similar culinary uses). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (præṅtanye) /prɛ̃tanje/.
