Etymology: Origin uncertain; apparently related to prim v., prim adj., prim n.4 (all of which are first attested later). Compare primp v., and also primping n., primping adj. Perhaps compare also prink v.2, prink v.3
Chiefly Scottish and U.S.
Originally (of the mouth, etc.): pursed, set; primly shut. Later (of a person, thing, etc.): prim, neat; (also) affected.Apparently unattested in the 17th and 18th centuries.
