Etymology: < classical Latin prīmōris (or prīmor: see note) first, front, leading, also prīmōrēs (plural noun) front rank in battle, chief or leading men, apparently ultimately < prīmus prime adj. (see below). Compare Italian †primori (plural) noble men, chiefs, leaders (1598 in Florio).The nominative singular corresponding to classical Latin prīmōrēs (plural) and to the oblique singular forms is recorded only in post-classical Latin, as primor (c500 in an isolated attestation, and in an undated glossary). The word has been derived from the collocation prīmō ōre , ablative (in early use the word is used frequently qualifying parts of the body, as in prīmōribus labrīs at the tip of one's lips; compare prīmīs labrīs , in the same sense), but it is not clear how this gave rise to the other forms. An alternative suggestion is that the word results from a blend of prīmus and prior prior adj.
