Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin practicant-, practicans.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin practicant-, practicans medical practitioner (c1212 in a British source), legal practitioner (a1562), use as noun of present participle of practicare to practise medicine (13th cent.: see practicate adj.). Compare Middle French, French pratiquant person who habitually makes use of certain things (1370, 1555 in Middle French), legal practitioner (1549 in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation), German Praktikant , †Practicant person undergoing practical professional training (17th cent.; 1650 or earlier with reference to medical students (compare quot. 1827); now chiefly ‘student on an internship’; earlier in sense ‘schemer, plotter’ (end of the 16th cent., after Middle French)).
A person who practises or makes a practice of a technique, procedure, skill, etc.; a practitioner; (formerly) spec. †a medical practitioner (obsolete).
