Etymology: < German Pristan (Y. Toyama 1923, in Chem. Umschau auf dem Gebiete der Fette, Oele, Wachse u. Harze 30 186/1) < classical Latin pristis large fish or sea mammal, sometimes identified with the sawfish ( < ancient Greek πρίστις , probably sawfish < πρισ- , stem of πρίειν to saw (see prion n.¹) + -τις , suffix forming feminine nouns; generally considered to be a feminine form corresponding to Hellenistic Greek πρίστης person who saws) + German -an -ane suffix².

Chemistry.

A saturated hydrocarbon which is a colourless oil and occurs in the liver oils of certain sharks and related species; 2,6,10,14-tetramethyl pentadecane, C₁₉H₄₀.
