Etymology: < classical Latin praeclūsiōn-, praeclūsiō device for stopping the flow of water in a pipe, stopcock, in post-classical Latin also obstruction (4th cent.), prevention (1437 in a British source), (in legal use) bar (16th cent. in British sources) < praeclūs- , past participial stem of praeclūdere preclude v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French preclusion action of stopping something (1483).
