Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: Latin sonus , -i- connective, -fication suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin sonus sound (see sound n.3) + -i- connective + -fication suffix.
The use of non-speech sound to convey quantifiable information or represent data, typically as the output from an electronic device; the conversion of data into sound for this purpose.A Geiger counter is an example of a device which uses sonification, producing audible clicks each time an ionizing particle is detected.
