Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin praegravāt-, praegravāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin praegravāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of praegravāre to weigh down, burden < prae- pre- prefix + gravāre to weigh down (see gravamen n.). Compare earlier pregravation n. and later pregravitate v.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To weigh down, overburden. Also intransitive: to sink down; = pregravitate v.
