Etymology: < French mignonnette type of fabric (1697), type of lace (1699 in Le Mercure Galant, cited in F. B. Palliser Hist. Lace (1865) 31), reseda (see quot. 1752 at sense 2a and also quot. 1820 at sense 2a; used earlier of other plants), use as noun of feminine of Middle French mignonnet adjective, ‘nice, gentle’ (c1480) < mignon (see minion adj.) + -et , diminutive suffix (compare -et suffix1).
