Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pyridine n., aldoxime n. at aldo- comb. form 2
Etymology: Apparently < p- and -r- (in pyridine n.) + al- (in aldoxime n. at aldo- comb. form 2) + -i- (in pyridine n.) + -doxime (in aldoxime n. at aldo- comb. form 2).
Pharmacology.
A drug used in conjunction with atropine as an antidote to poisoning by certain organophosphates, acting by dephosphorylating and reactivating the enzyme acetylcholinesterase.Pralidoxime is the chloride, iodide, or mesylate of a quaternary ammonium ion, 2-hydroxyiminomethyl-1-methylpyridinium, [HON=CH·C5H4N(CH3)]+.
