(Irish óg , Scottish Gaelic òg ) + tigern , tigerna , (in an ogham inscription) tigirn lord (Irish tiarna , Scottish Gaelic tighearn , tighearna ), cognate with Gaulish tigerno- , Old Welsh -tigirn (in personal names), Welsh teyrn (further etymology uncertain, perhaps < the Celtic base of Early Irish tech , teg- house (Irish teach , Scottish Gaelic taigh : see thack n.)).Outside the Celtic languages, the term first appears in a Latin context:1220 Acts Parl.
