Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin postriduanus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin postriduanus, postridianus relating to the following day (5th cent.) < classical Latin postrīdiē (also postrīduō , after trīduō (see triduum n.) and similar forms) on the next day ( < posterī diē (in an isolated attestation: the more usual form being posterō diē , ablative) < posterī , locative of posterus later, next (see postero- comb. form), with loss of medial syllable + diē , locative of diēs day: see diurnal adj. and n.) + -ānus -an suffix. Compare earlier triduan adj.
Obsolete. rare.
Done on the following day.The employment of the word in quot. 1651 is unclear.
