Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἄκριτος , χρωματ- , χρῶμα , -acy suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄκριτος not distinguishing (see Acrita n.) + χρωματ-, χρῶμα colour (see chrome n.) + -acy suffix. Compare -chromasy comb. form. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ:kritoˌkrōu·măsi) /ˌækrɪtəʊˈkrəʊməsɪ/.
Medicine. Obsolete.
Defective colour vision; colour blindness.

1874 A. J. Howe Man. Eye Surg. 185 The defect may be called acritochromacy, though a half dozen other technical terms, highly compounded, have been invented to express the visual abnormality.
1882 J. Ashurst Princ. & Pract. Surg. (ed. 3) xxxv. 694 Color-blindness, or, as Dixon more accurately terms it, Acritochromacy, is a defect of vision in which the power of distinguishing one or more colors is lost.
