Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ācris , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ācris pungent (see acrid adj.) + -ous suffix; compare -ious suffix. Compare French âcre (see acrid adj.). Compare earlier acrid adj. and discussion at that entry. Compare also earlier acrimonious adj.Compare the following for (apparently isolated) adoption of the Latin word in unchanged form:1682 N. Grew Disc. Tasts in Plants vi. i. §21 in Anat. Plants 281 Acris, is also Compounded. For first, simply Hot, it is not; because there are many Hot Bodies, which are not Acria..Nor secondly, is it simply Pungent.With the form acreous compare -eous suffix.
