Etymology: < geo- comb. form + physics n., after German Geophysik (1815 or earlier). Compare French géophysique (1861 or earlier).

The branch of science concerned with the physics of the earth and the processes which affect it; the application of the principles, methods, and techniques of physics to the study of the earth, esp. the crust. Also in extended use with reference to the moon and other celestial objects.
