Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pot n.1, gun n.
Etymology: < pot n.1 + gun n., originally on account of the shape of the cannon; apparently subsequently (in sense 2) influenced by association with popgun n., although the present word is in fact attested earlier than popgun n. in both senses 2a and 2b.
Now rare (historical in later use).
1. A cannon with a separate chamber; (also) a short gun with a large bore, a mortar.
