单词 post hoc ergo propter hoc
释义

post hoc ergo propter hocphr.

Brit. /ˈpəʊst ˌhɒk ˌəːɡəʊ ˈprɒptə ˌhɒk/, U.S. /ˈpoʊs(t) ˌ(h)ɑk ˌərɡoʊ ˈprɑptər ˌ(h)ɑk/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin post hoc, ergo propter hoc.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin post hoc, ergo propter hoc after this, therefore because of this (1662 or earlier: see note below) < classical Latin post after (see post- prefix) + hoc this (see hoc n.) + ergō therefore (see ergo adv.) + propter because of, on account of (see propternuptial adj.) + hoc this. The phrase was widely disseminated in A. Arnauld & P. Nicole La logique, ou l'art de penser (1662) III. xvii. (3) 316 ‘cette tromperie ordinaire de l'esprit humain, post hoc, ergo propter hoc’ ( III. xix. (3) in later editions: quot. 1685). It has not been located in medieval texts, and may well originate in a tradition of early modern commentary on or translation of Aristotle Rhetoric 1401b30. Compare the translations of this passage by Ermolao Barbaro (a1493) ‘post hoc, saepe accipitur loco eius, quod est, propter hoc’ (in Rhetoricorum Aristotelis libri tres (1544) 137), and William of Moerbeke (a1286), ‘post hoc tanquam propter hoc accipiunt’, and an earlier anonymous translator, ‘post hoc sicut propter hoc accipiunt’ ( B. Schneider, ed., Aristoteles latinus XXXI. 1-2: Rhetorica (1978), 276 and 117 respectively). Compare also the opposition of post hoc and propter hoc without reference to Aristotle in Rupert of Deutz (a1130), Commentaria in euangelium sancti Iohannis (CCCM 9) 10: 556, ‘Respiciamus quid post hoc uel maxime propter hoc miraculum factum sit’, ‘we turn our attention to why this miracle was performed after this or in particular because of this’, and Peter Comestor (?a1178), Serm. XXXIII (PL 198: 1801C), ‘post hoc, imo et propter hoc’, ‘after this, or rather also because of this’.
‘After this, therefore because of this’; denoting or alluding to the logical fallacy that a thing which follows another is therefore caused by it.
