Forms: early Middle English iswunten (south-west midlands), early Middle English swindene (inflected form, perhaps transmission error).
Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymons: English swunden , swind v.
Etymology: < swunden, past participle of swind v. (compare Forms 3 at that entry).In the form swindene (if it is not a scribal error) perhaps showing analogical levelling of the stem vowel of the present stem or the past tense plural. Compare similar use of aswunden , past participle of aswind v., also in the manuscripts of Laȝamon's Brut (e.g. in quot. c1275 at aswind v. 2).
Obsolete.
Lacking courage or strength. Cf. aswind v. 2.In quot. c1275 the sense is either ‘worn out, exhausted’ or ‘dejected, dispirited’.
